Here we have a portrait of Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer posed with his family, a group sitting that stands out among the many National Photo Company studio and press images of Washington officials in the period. Palmer headed the Justice Department from 1919 to 1921, a stretch dominated by the postwar Red Scare and the nationwide raids against suspected radicals that bore his name. The record dates the negative to 1919 or 1920 based on its neighbors in the collection, and the glass plate itself shows the streaks and surface wear typical of aging emulsions.
