Two gnomes scramble up the sweep of a large gold numeral 1, a playful motif that sets this picture apart from the angels and fairies around it. Gnomes in illustration of this kind were a favorite of late nineteenth and early twentieth century European and American printmakers, who used them as cheerful little figures for greetings, calendars and decorative cards. A numeral like this one usually stood for a year, a birthday or a new start, so the image reads as a celebration rather than a devotional scene. The board places it among religious subjects, but its charm lies in its lighthearted, folkloric spirit.
