A large gold numeral 6 anchors this picture, with a gnome set beside it and blue ribbons trailing through the design. Decorative pieces like this were often made as greeting-card or scrap-style ephemera, where die-cut figures, metallic accents and ribbon motifs were layered together to mark a birthday or other milestone. Gnomes and fairy folk were popular subjects in illustration of the late 1800s and early 1900s, drawn from European folklore. Its place on a religious board is a loose fit, so the gnome is the detail worth a closer look.
