The numeral 7 in this die-cut is built around a gnome and a crayfish, an unusual pairing that sets it apart from the angels and fairies around it. Die-cut scraps like this were popular in Europe and America from about the 1860s through the early 1900s. Printers made them with color lithography, then cut them into shapes so children and adults could collect, paste into albums, or give them as birthday and holiday greetings. A numeral often marked a child's age, so this piece likely doubled as a playful birthday keepsake, with the gnome and crayfish adding a storybook charm.
