A die-cut numeral, decorated with small gnomes and a single letter, anchors this piece and sets it apart from plainer paper ornaments. Printers in the later 1800s stamped out shaped scraps like this one, which were glued into albums and onto greeting cards for birthdays, holidays and other occasions. Gnomes and fairies turned up often in these designs, drawing on folklore that was popular in illustrated books of the period. The pairing of a number, a letter and small folkloric figures suggests a card made to mark a particular event, though this example's original use is not recorded.
