A die-cut scrap from the Victorian era, this decorative letter is built around a young girl set among roses, with the initial itself serving as a frame for the scene. Die-cut scraps like this were made by the thousands in the 1870s and 1880s, when chromolithographed paper was cut with steel dies and sold for pasting into albums, greeting cards and keepsake books. Pieces on the Angels and Fairies theme often blurred sentiment and symbolism, so a child among flowers could read as a guardian figure or a gentle emblem of innocence. The embossed edges and layered color are worth a close look, since they show how much hand finishing went into work that was meant to be cheap and cherished at once.
