A die-cut Victorian angel, with her wings and flowers cut out as a single shaped piece, is a good example of the scrap and chromolithographed ephemera that circulated in the second half of the nineteenth century. Cards like this were pasted into albums, tucked into letters, and exchanged at Christmas, New Year and birthdays, when sentimental images of children and heavenly messengers were especially popular. The star she holds points to the Nativity and the cheerful, hopeful tone of the period, when such cards were treasured as keepsakes and often survive only in scrapbooks.
