Its subject headings pair the Danites, a secret enforcement group linked to early Mormonism, with marriage proposals, a combination that sets this Cleveland lithograph apart from other pictures of the group. Rumors of the Danites spread widely in anti-Mormon writing from the 1850s onward, and by the 1870s the name was shorthand for menace in popular print. W.J. Morgan & Co., the Cleveland firm that produced the sheet, made colored lithographs for a broad American market, and the courtship theme suggests the piece was meant as satire aimed at Mormon men and their families. The record dates the print only to a span between 1860 and 1890.
