Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1863 was a river town on high bluffs above the Mississippi, and it had spent the war as a Confederate stronghold that blocked Union control of the river. Before the fighting, its economy rested on cotton shipped by steamboat and on the trade that moved through its landing. From May to early July 1863, Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant besieged the town, and residents took shelter in hillside caves and cellars as shells fell on the streets. The Confederate garrison surrendered on July 4, 1863, giving the Union control of the entire Mississippi and effectively splitting the Confederacy in two. The map shows a community that had been shaped by river commerce and was about to be remembered mainly for the siege.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Vicksburg, Mississippi, drawn in 1863. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
