California, Missouri, in 1869 was a small county seat in Moniteau County, set on the Missouri River bluffs in the central part of the state. The town had grown up around farming, with corn, wheat, and livestock moving out by river and by the wagon roads that fed the surrounding countryside. Its prospects had been tied to the Missouri River trade and to the railroad building that was then pushing across the state, though the line that would transform the town came only later. In 1869 the people of California knew their town as a quiet market center where courthouse business, church life, and seasonal trade brought farm families into town on regular weekends.
