Eleanor Roosevelt sits beside Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands in this 1943 photograph, a meeting that captured the wartime partnership between an American first lady and a monarch in exile. Wilhelmina had led the Dutch government from London after the German invasion of May 1940, and she spent much of the war broadcasting messages of resistance to her occupied homeland. Mrs. Roosevelt, who traveled widely on behalf of the war effort, was a frequent visitor to Allied figures and wartime causes. The picture offers a useful glimpse of how the two women, both prominent public figures, shared the stage of the home front and the wider struggle against the Axis.
