The frigate Constitution, launched in 1797 and known as "Old Ironsides," is the vessel pictured here riding at anchor in Boston Harbor, the city where she was built and where she was often docked for repairs and visits. Her reputation came largely from the War of 1812, when she defeated several British warships and earned her nickname after British cannonballs were said to bounce off her oak hull. The record gives no date for this print, so its exact age is uncertain, but the ship's long association with Boston makes the harbor setting a fitting frame for her story.
