Canadian poster artists of 1918 often borrowed famous lines to make a point, and this one turns a line from Tennyson's "The Charge of the Light Brigade" ("Theirs not to reason why, / Theirs but to do and die") around. The soldier's sacrifice is assigned to the home front as a different kind of duty: buying Victory Bonds. Canada raised money through several wartime Victory Loan campaigns, and posters like this one urged ordinary citizens to lend their savings to the government. The lithograph's color and direct wording show how the country's propaganda tied civilian finance to the fighting overseas.
