Dated August 29, 1923, this glass negative is titled simply *Botanical Garden*, though that title comes from unverified data the National Photo Company recorded on the negative or its sleeve. The company was a Washington, D.C., commercial studio that photographed the city's streets, buildings and public life in the early twentieth century. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Glass plates of this kind were standard in that era, and the streaks and blemishes visible across the surface come from the gradual breakdown of the original coatings.
