A glass negative of Hale Holden, identified in its title with the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad, is dated September 13, 1923, in its record. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that produced a large volume of press and portrait images in the early twentieth century, made the picture, which reflects the era's practice of circulating images of business and railroad leaders to newspapers. Notice the streaks and spots across the surface, which come from the natural deterioration of the original coating rather than from the image itself.
