Taken on October 12, 1926, this glass negative records a gathering of the Christopher Columbus Society, a fraternal or civic group named for the explorer whose 1492 landing is marked on that date. The title comes from data the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and the record has not been independently verified, so the exact location and membership are not confirmed. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm active in the early twentieth century, made large numbers of such plates for news and documentary use. Visible streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural breakdown of its original coating, which is part of what makes the plate worth a close look.
