Old Cairo was one of the attractions on the Pike, the amusement strip at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, where performers in Egyptian dress presented a village-style street scene for paying visitors. This stereograph, issued by the Philadelphia publisher C.H. Graves and copyrighted in 1904, shows the exhibit as fairgoers would have seen it. Midway concessions like this one drew large crowds and gave the fair much of its popular reputation, and the paired images of stereo cards were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope at home, bringing the fair's exotic displays into parlors across the country.
