Few images from the Civil War show the cost of battle as plainly as this one, which records the dead of the July 1863 fighting on the fields outside Gettysburg. The photograph was made in the days after the battle, when burial parties had not yet cleared the ground, and it was published by Alexander Gardner's studio as one of the first widely circulated views of the war's dead. Viewers should also know that photographers of the period sometimes moved or arranged bodies to improve a composition, a practice that has been debated since the pictures first appeared.
