Taken in the days after the battle, this view of the Gettysburg field shows the human toll that the title "A Harvest of Death" points to: rows of dead Confederate soldiers lying where they fell near the Union lines, the bodies of men who had charged across open ground on July 3, 1863. Alexander Gardner's team, working for the Gardner and Brady studio, made many such pictures in the weeks after the fighting, and images like this one helped Northern and Southern audiences see the cost of the battle for the first time. Its stark, unposed scene is one of the most influential records of the Civil War.
