Trestle work at Promontory Point, in the Salt Lake Valley, shows the timber framing the Central Pacific Railroad used to carry its track over low, soft ground and across water near the Great Salt Lake in 1868. The photograph appeared as plate XXVIII in *Sun Pictures of Rocky Mountain Scenery*, a 1870 volume by geologist F.V. Hayden, which presented thirty views along the transcontinental line from Omaha to Sacramento. Trestles like these were built quickly from cut lumber, since crews had to keep laying track toward the meeting point at Promontory Summit, where the Central Pacific and Union Pacific lines were joined in 1869. The print is worth studying for its close look at the sheer labor of building a railroad through the western wilderness.
