Theodore Roosevelt is shown at the oars, a detail that sets this picture apart from the many formal portraits of the president on the same board. The caption card dates it to about September 1905, a period when Roosevelt was regularly seeking out vigorous outdoor exercise, rowing among his favorite pursuits alongside riding, tennis and long walks. Photographs of the president at leisure like this one helped the public see the athletic, outdoorsman image he cultivated. The date and identification come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified, so the scene is best read as a record of his recreation rather than a precisely documented event.
