Hospital patients gave this painted testimonial to Surgeon Alex B. Mott, and its subject is a rare moment of Union triumph on the first day at Gettysburg: the capture of an entire Confederate brigade by the 6th Wisconsin, the 95th New York, and the 14th New York State Militia. Conrad Feitag's signature in the lower left marks him as the artist, and the title lettering below the image names the regiments involved. The fighting on July 1, 1863, west of Gettysburg was among the Army of the Potomac's costliest opening engagements, and the wounded who later recovered in Union hospitals had good reason to honor the surgeon who cared for them. The drawing, with its brown ink, watercolor, and white highlights on tan paper, is as much a keepsake of that gratitude as a record of the battle.
