Lockport, on the Illinois and Michigan Canal, is the setting here, and the picture shows the working boats that moved grain, coal, and freight along that waterway. The canal opened in 1848 to link Chicago with the Illinois River, and Lockport's stone locks were among the engineering features that let boats climb and descend the land between them. Boats of this kind were typically pulled by mules or horses walking the towpath, and the trade declined as railroads took over freight in the later nineteenth century. The caption card gives no date, so the view is best read as a glimpse of the canal in its working years.
