Alfred R. Waud drew this wide, low view of the Rappahannock at Skinker's Neck, a bend in the river a short distance below Fredericksburg, Virginia. He worked in pencil and Chinese white on tan paper around December 1862, shortly after the Battle of Fredericksburg, when the armies faced each other across the river. Harper's Weekly printed the sketch on February 28, 1863, under the spelling "Skinners Neck." Waud was one of the magazine's staff artists who sent drawings from the front, and the sheet shows how the war's ground looked to the people who read about it at home.
