A raven perches among the hats of Benjamin Harrison and James G. Blaine, a pairing that would have been clear to 1890 readers, and the bird's ominous associations, sharpened by Edgar Allan Poe's famous poem, give the cartoon its bite. Joseph Keppler, the Austrian-born caricaturist who founded the satirical magazine *Puck*, drew the lithograph in color during Harrison's first term. Blaine, who served as Harrison's secretary of state, was a longtime rival for leadership of the Republican Party, so the image comments on the tension between a sitting president and a powerful cabinet member who had his own ambitions.
