A fire at the S. Kann warehouse on January 10, 1925, is the event this glass negative is said to record, though that title comes from unverified data written by the National Photo Company. The firm worked in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, documenting city streets, buildings and news events, and scenes like this one show how quickly photographers were expected to reach a breaking story. The negative's coating has developed streaks and blemishes from natural deterioration, a common sign of age in glass plates. Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947.
