Rochester, New York, in late October 1940 is the setting here, and the title, "Autos that pass in the fray," points to the cars themselves as the real subject. The record dates the print to October 27, 1940, just over a week before that year's presidential election, and names Wendell Willkie, the Republican candidate who ran against Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Henry A. Wallace, Roosevelt's Democratic running mate. Motorcades were a central part of campaigning that year, and the crowded street shows how much of the race was fought in person on the road.
