Two early automobiles climb a mountain road toward the entrance to Rockbridge Alum Springs, a resort in Rockbridge County, Virginia, that drew visitors for its mineral waters well before the car arrived. The alum springs had been a fashionable retreat since the early 1800s, when guests came to take the waters and stay in its hotel and cottages. By the early 1930s, when this view was likely made, the automobile had begun to replace the horse and carriage as the way families reached such destinations, and the cars here show how the approach to the resort had changed. The photograph is worth a closer look for the road itself and the vehicles' open bodies.
