The title sets a placid canal against the turbulent Potomac below Great Falls, and the drawing shows how the two sit side by side. The river drops sharply at the falls, so boats could not pass the rapids, and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal was built to carry traffic around them through a series of locks. In 1918 the canal still moved coal and goods along its towpath route, though its commercial life was nearing an end. The ink and colored pencil over graphite give the scene a careful, hand-built texture.
