An 1844 trade print advertises F. Basham, a modeller of plaster, cement and scagliola, working at 408 Broadway. Scagliola was an imitation-marble technique using colored plaster, and decorators used it for columns, chimneypieces and wall panels, so this trade sat between building and ornament. Broadway was among the busiest commercial streets in New York at the time, and a card like this was likely aimed at passing architects, builders and clients. The print was entered with the U.S. Copyright Office in 1844, and a catalog card links it to a name, Palmer, though that detail is unverified.
