Broadway hung with flags is what sets this sheet apart from other views of the avenue, with banners strung across the street and draped from the buildings. Joseph Pennell, an American illustrator and printmaker, made many lithographs of city streets in the early 1900s, turning crowds, architecture, and traffic into patterns of line and tone. An associated date of 1904 is noted, though it is unverified and no date appears on the sheet itself. Views like this one help show how New York's busiest thoroughfare looked around the turn of the twentieth century.
