Frederick Starr (1858-1933) was an American anthropologist and professor who taught at the University of Chicago and traveled widely to study peoples in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Japan. This glass negative, one of the 8 by 10 inch plates from the George Grantham Bain Collection, shows him as the press photographers of the Bain News Service recorded public figures in New York during the early 1900s. The title comes from caption information the agency wrote on the negative or its card, which the Library of Congress notes has not been independently verified, so the sitting's date and occasion are unknown. Glass plates like this one preserve sharp detail that makes them valuable to researchers of the period.
