The record identifies the sitter as Ernest Siegfried on an 8 x 10 inch glass negative, though that title comes from caption information the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its card and has not been independently confirmed. Large glass plates like this were common for news and studio work in the early twentieth century, and their sharp detail made them useful for later prints. George Grantham Bain founded his news photo service in New York around 1900 and supplied pictures of public figures and events to newspapers. Plates like this one are worth noticing for their physical fragility and for the cards that sometimes survive with them.
