Turned to the left and framed from the head to the shoulders, this c1909 portrait shows James Daniel Richardson, a Tennessee Democrat who spent much of his public life in the United States House of Representatives. Born in 1843, Richardson served in the Confederate army before entering politics, and he became one of the better-known Democrats in Congress in the years around 1900. The print is part of the Library of Congress's collection of portrait photographs from 1900 to 1910, when studio likenesses of public men were widely printed and circulated.
