Scratched on the back of this half-plate daguerreotype is the name "Jno. Y. Mason," and a 1898 issue of *The Green Bag* later identified the sitter. John Young Mason, a Virginian, served as Attorney General and then Secretary of the Navy under President Tyler before becoming minister to France in 1853. The plate came from Mathew Brady's studio, and its gold toning warms the silver image, a finish many photographers used in the 1840s and 1850s to add depth to portraits. Mason died in Paris in 1859.
