Shown in three-quarter length and turned to the left, this half-plate daguerreotype records James Murray Mason (1798-1871) during the years he was a prominent Virginia senator. Mathew Brady's studio made the plate sometime between 1844 and 1860, when daguerreotype portraits were a fashionable way for public men to be recorded. Mason later became known nationally as a Confederate diplomat, and his 1861 seizure from the British mail steamer Trent nearly brought war between the United States and Britain. The plate came to the Library of Congress through a 1920 transfer from the U.S. War College.
