Collegeville, in Montgomery County, sat along the Perkiomen Creek about thirty miles northwest of Philadelphia in 1894, and its character came from farming and the college. Ursinus College, founded in the Reformed Church tradition, drew students from across the state and gave the village much of its social life. The Perkiomen Railroad carried grain, produce, and dairy goods from surrounding farms, while mills along the creek ground flour and processed local crops. Many residents were of Pennsylvania German descent, and church, school, and the valley's rural trade structured everyday life. The bird's-eye view records these buildings, from the college halls to the mill sheds and rail yard.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Collegeville, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1894. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
