Telford, Pennsylvania, in Montgomery County, is the subject of this 1894 bird's-eye view, a town set in the Pennsylvania German farm country north of Philadelphia. In the 1890s the region was largely made up of family farms, many worked by Mennonite and Reformed households whose German dialect still shaped daily speech. Small industry, including mills and workshops, tied such villages to the railroad lines and regional markets that carried their goods to Philadelphia and the Lehigh Valley. Residents of the time would have known Telford as a close-knit community where church, school, and the seasonal rhythm of planting and harvest set the pace of life. Because the town was small, the map records nearly every street and house, which makes it a valuable record of how the place looked before the twentieth century.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Telford, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1894. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
