Millersville, a small borough in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, was in 1894 a town shaped by its farms and its school. Surrounding fields of corn, wheat, and tobacco fed the county's markets, and many residents were of Pennsylvania German descent, with families who had farmed the limestone valleys for generations. The Millersville State Normal School, which trained teachers for the state's classrooms, gave the town much of its identity, and its students, faculty, and campus buildings were a visible presence on the streets. Life in the borough centered on churches, local merchants, and the rhythms of the school year, while the wider county looked to Lancaster for rail connections, commerce, and news.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Millersville, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1894. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
