Irvona, a small borough in Clearfield County in west-central Pennsylvania, was a coal town in 1895, when bituminous mining drove the local economy. Mines and the railroad lines that carried their coal shaped where houses, stores and churches were built, and many residents worked underground or in the surface operations around the shafts. The mid-1890s were hard years for the region's miners, who joined the nationwide coal strikes of 1894 over wages and working conditions, and the economic slump that followed left many mining families short of work. Like other towns in the bituminous fields, Irvona was known to its people mainly through its mines, its rail connections and the close-knit neighborhoods that grew up around them.
