Mifflintown, the seat of Juniata County in central Pennsylvania, sat on the Juniata River in 1895, a small market town whose economy rested on farming, local merchants, and the shipping and rail links that tied the Juniata Valley to larger markets. The county courthouse and its square anchored civic life, where court days, elections, and business drew farmers in from the surrounding townships. Like many river towns of the period, Mifflintown depended on steady rail connections for grain, lumber, and goods, and its residents would have known it chiefly as a quiet county center with close ties to the valley's farm families. The bird's-eye view of 1895 shows the town laid out in its streets, churches, and riverfront, a compact community at a time when the broader region was still shaped by agriculture and small-scale industry.
