Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania, in 1895 was a lumber and tanning town in Elk County, in the northwestern part of the state, where the forests of hemlock and hardwood had drawn sawmills and bark-fed tanneries to the banks of the Clarion River. Work in those years followed the timber: crews cut the trees, teams hauled logs to the water, and mill whistles set the pace of daily life. Like many towns in the region, Johnsonburg was still shaped by the boom that had brought its first settlers and businesses, and residents measured their prospects by how long the nearby forests would last. A map drawn that year records the streets, churches, and works as they stood at the height of that cutting, before the best timber was gone.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1895. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
