Inch by inch" is the title of this 1960 editorial cartoon by Bill Mauldin, which ran in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on September 1, 1960, as many schools were opening for the fall term. Its subject, school segregation, traced back to the 1954 Supreme Court decision in *Brown v. Board of Education*, which ruled that separate public schools were unconstitutional. The ruling's follow-up called for desegregation "with all deliberate speed," and in many Southern districts progress came slowly and only under court pressure. Mauldin, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, used the drawing to comment on that gap between the court's ruling and the classroom. The Library of Congress later included it in its 2004 exhibition marking fifty years since *Brown*.
