Figures practicing the shot put, a heavy-ball throw from the shoulder, appear in this set of Kinetoscope pictures from 1896. The series was reproduced in *The American Amateur Photographer* that December, showing how short films made for Edison's peep-show viewer could also serve as a record of athletic training. The shot put, a field event with roots in old contests of strength, suited early motion studies because its short, forceful movement reads clearly across successive frames. The still reproductions preserve a sequence originally meant to be seen in motion.
