Lined up on the sand in a long row, these women are posed alongside vintage automobiles, a staging that suggests a seaside outing or a promotional event rather than a casual snapshot. Photographs like this often grew out of the early twentieth century's enthusiasm for motoring, when cars were newly fashionable and beach resorts drew crowds eager to show off their latest pastimes. Such group portraits also reveal how women's public presence was changing, as they appeared in leisure settings once dominated by men. Look closely at the cars' running boards, bumpers and dress to date the scene.
