The title, *Inside and out*, points to a picture that sets a scene's interior against its exterior, a pairing that suited the stencil-based serigraph technique of the period. Made in 1940, this serigraph is signed on the image and was acquired by the Library of Congress through the Pennell fund. Screenprinting was gaining ground among American artists in the late 1930s, partly through federal art projects that used it to make affordable, multiple images. Its flat, layered color is worth noticing, since each hue was laid down through a separate stencil.
