*Stocks up* takes its name from the rising prices that absorbed investors in the late 1840s, and this New York lithograph from about 1849 comments on that speculative mood. Nathaniel Currier's shop produced inexpensive sheets like this one for a broad public, often using humor to comment on fashion, politics and business. The print appeared a decade after the Panic of 1837, when speculation and its risks were still fresh in many Americans' minds. It is listed in the Gale Research catalog raisonné of Currier & Ives, which makes it a useful reference for tracing the firm's early work.
