Hanging on to the demagogue" is an American editorial cartoon dated February 1, 1933, two days after Adolf Hitler was appointed chancellor of Germany. The drawing was made in crayon and opaque white over a blue pencil underdrawing, a method often used to prepare art for newspaper reproduction. Its title and subjects, Hitler and the swastika, suggest that the American press in early 1933 treated the rise of the National Socialists largely as the work of one politician. The cartoon is a useful example of how editorial artists tried to explain a fast-moving foreign event to readers in a single image.
