Few of the National Photo Company's Washington street views show a streetcar dressed in traffic-safety messages, which makes this November 1922 print a useful record of how the city tried to reach pedestrians and drivers. In the early 1920s, automobiles were multiplying on Washington's streets, and streetcars shared those crowded lanes with horse-drawn wagons, trucks and people crossing on foot. Civic groups and transit operators often used painted or posted slogans to urge caution, turning everyday vehicles into rolling public notices. The photograph, from the company's collection now held by the Library of Congress, captures that effort at a moment when the city was still adjusting to motor traffic.
