A bench set on a layered rock ledge looks out over a valley of dense forest, inviting a long pause before the view. The record does not name the exact site, so the scene is best read as an example of the Virginia landscape that drew Thomas Jefferson's attention. In his *Notes on the State of Virginia*, he wrote at length about the state's natural wonders, including the Natural Bridge, which he owned. The picture's link to him rests on its place in the gallery's Jefferson grouping rather than on any documented visit to this spot.
